Charming Growth

WELCOME!!
Thanks for stopping in.
Originally this post was going
to be about our Maple Trees
in the backyard....but ....I am moving one.

All along I have wanted to put a Clumping Birch in this
spot.  I have been debating if the space will work or not
for A Birch.  My husband would respond with " if
it doesn't work we can take it out."
:)
To make a long story short...I found
a Clumping Birch, and the backyard is having
a little work done on it.
....again. :))

So, I thought I would show you how much
our garden in the front has grown. This yard came with
some crazy, ugly, slopes.
Not a tree or a plant, just a few rows of sod...

^(this picture was taken after we had already planted our Burr Oak)^
It was lacking in curb appeal, completely.
But, we worked hard that summer, rearranging rocks,
filling it up with top soil. It  took a lot of soil to fix the slope that
cut right into our foundation.
Then we added some hydrangeas, evergreens
and pansies.

Every year we top up the soil with
Nature's Gold and cedar wood chips.
And every year the grass gets stronger and stronger
from it...I think I use less water too !
All of the plants seem to be happy in their spots.
The grass responds well to the Natures Gold, too.
Eventually, I would like to carve out some more of the grass and
balance out the trees.  I would love to add another Evergreen
(or two) and some boulders, continuing with that cottage in
the mountains look that I am going for.

But as of June 2014, it looks like this...

Waiting for the Hydrangea to start budding ...
it seems really late, even for this planting zone.

Oregon Pine

Mock Orange...sadly this one
doesn't have that wonderful smell that
they can have.  Last fall, I pruned the Mock Orange.
I don't think you are supposed to, so
this year I will leave it to continue
growing.  I may have to support it with some
sticks or a cage, it's pretty droopy.

So many pretty little blooms!

These pansies make me smile, I put a few
in when we did this garden and they voluntarily
keep on reseeding.  I dig a few up and spread them
out, just to space them out a bit more.

There it is so far,
I am learning to enjoy the progress,
and be patient. Not an easy task for me.

I hope you have a safe and happy
CANADA DAY!!

Osakazuki Japanese Maple

Good morning!
I am glad you stopped in,
I have been working in the backyard...
okay, I guess you could say 'playing'!
Come see...

We made it to the big Art Knapp Sale
and I got the trees I've been hoping for
at 40% off. Yaaaay!
We drove SlOwLy home...
I didn't want to lose a single leaf!

We dragged it through the house...
don't ask..

We moved the compost to another location,
not its permanent spot, but it will do for now.
Here is the bare spot we are left with...

You can see the compost way over to the right.

And...
after a huge hole was dug,
 here it sits,
my Osakazuki Japanese Maple.

It has filled up this corner nicely,

providing a greenish screen for part
of the patio.

But, my favorite is when birds come and land on the
railing. (I am still trying to get a picture of it.)
It's brought the garden closer to the house,
which adds to that 'cottage' feel I am going for.

Now, I am going to play around,
and find a good spot for my
Korean Maple!

Hope you are getting your hands dirty too!

Hope everyone had a wonderful Fathers Day!

We left the plans for the day, up to my husband.   He decided
that he would like to go on a hike :)

He was looking for a lake,
they are always worth the hike!
We never did find the lake,
but we found some gorgeous views,
:)

And pretty wildflowers,
and I brought my camera...
I think these are Purple Aster.

I am not sure, but I think these are
Pink Bull Thistles,
so pretty!

White Yarrow

More Purple Aster.

I love how nature takes over...
boulders settle into the mountain side,
and soon wildflowers and grasses are
flourishing beautifully.

It was a great day hiking,
lot's of fresh air and exercise!
Can't wait to do it again.

We also managed to go early on Saturday to the
huge Father's Day sale at
Art Knapps....it was  crazy busy....
AND my trees where still there!!!!
Wooh-wooh!!

So this week I will be playing around in
 my garden again! YAAAY!
Have a great week!

Graduation

Oh what a busy weekend...
our middle daughter has Graduated!

Boy, how the time flies!
From your first day of pre-school,

until high school graduation,
you couldn't have made us prouder!

We Love You!

Under Cupboard Lighting

You know those days that feel
like murphy's law from the gate?
That's how my day has been.
It started with our kitchen.  When I
turned on the lights, only one out of the three worked.
It wasn't the bulbs, the whole fixture needed
 to be replaced.
Ofcourse.

Not an easy task when you have a limited budget, ok,
no budget for lights right now! Until finally, we
deceided to just suck it up and go with the LED lights.
They seemed to be the right lighting, not bad pricing
and the sizes were available. My handy husband got right on them,
he had them all replaced in no time.  Soooo, much better!
Thanks Murphy for the reminder :)

The wall has a few holes that need to be filled now, and some touch up paint.
It wont take long...  Just add it to my list ;)

Once the lights were finished and the first coat of mud
was on the wall, I thought it would be a great
idea to wash our windows. So, I washed inside and out, and
just as I was finishing  ....It rained...no, no it poured!

So tonight is a WINE night! Lots of wine and turkey soup!
But all is well, that ends well.

Cheers Murphy!
