Our Sleeping Garden, March 2020

Are you are gardener, if you are then you may have a little sympathy for me.  We are still getting a few snow falls, and the ground is either mushy and muddy, or frozen solid.  This is usually the time that you risk losing perennials.  They think it's safe to come out of there hibernation and then it drops way below freezing.  Last year I lost a number of perennials due to this exact reason.

Patience is key this time of year.  As you can see I have little to none of that.  I've been out shoveling and breaking up the snow piles to assist in the melting process.  At this point I just want to be in the garden, no matter the temperature, no matter the reason.

Our garden 2018

Year by year our amount of privacy rises.  They say the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago.  I would have to agree, but how about 9 years ago?  At nine years we get a fair amount of privacy.

Sadly, we lost a maple that grew in front of our patio. It seemed to struggle from the first season and last winter did it in.  Not wasting any time, we replanted.  You can barely  see the branches over the fence on the left side, an Acer Atropurpureum.  There was a compost bin in that exact spot so I am hoping that the root structure will be happy this time.

Yes, I really push my planting zones.  I know it comes at a risk, but I would also like to add that our 'hardy from zone 3 to 8' did not survive  BUT our other Japanese Maples, zone 5 to 8, have...so far.  My neighbourhood is a zone 4, I like to think my garden has some protection and has a warmer micro climate due to all my planting.  Wishful thinking? maybe.

Below, when our garden was just starting to be planted. It's fun to look at the changes in just a few short years.

So young and still giving us such a beautiful display of fall colour.

This picture doesn't begin to do justice for the scarlet colour that our Osakazaki gives.

I used ribbon to get a little more height from our Waterfall Lace Leaf Maple when it was younger, now it is a good height and I just let it be.

Back inside we go! So I can start planning our new veggie beds.  No more pool this year.  I just can't do the water waste and the chemicals....and the labour.

Oh, and my afghan is coming along....S-L-O-W-L-Y but surely.  After a few alterations on the pattern, I think I've got it.  Thirty squares in and about seventy left to go! Woot-Woot!

Until next time,
Happy nesting!

My Mini Altar

Hello!
I'm still pushing through with my spring cleaning.  I love a clean house, don't you?  Getting rid of stale energy and forgotten corners.  After I finish cleaning and repairing a room, it always feels lighter and more spacious.

This week I've been working on the hallway.  Because of the fact that I am a maximalist it takes a bit more time to fill random picture hanger holes or even just to remove the pictures to wash the walls.  Everything comes down then I wash walls and scrub trim. I've repainted picture
frames and walls, and this time, it's my mini altar's turn.

I bought it a while back at the thrift store, I'm sure it was under $7.  I didn't know where it was going to end up in our home, but I knew it'd be cute after it met a paint brush.

First a bit of sanding and a good wash, then I gave it a few coats of blue.

Then a heavy coat of chalkpaint and some serious distressing.

I love this look, but it did nothing for the hallway, kind of blah. So back to the crafting table we went.

Oh! That's it!  A nice bright pop of colour, and  a bit of distressing with some sand paper.

Now, the fun part, setting up my altar.  It doesn't stay like this, I change this one quite often.  It holds some dear memories for my husband and I, well mostly me.  I collect rocks, feathers, sticks, pretty much everything a toddler would pick up! LOL, pretty sure I'm far worse than all of our girls combined ever were.

A lapis lazuli necklace for awakening true destiny and divine purpose.  A few words of wisdom on some favorite ornaments, and fresh intentions, or just a healing altar.  This time I've set my altar up for JOY.  I'm hoping globally we all find a bit more joy everyday. Remembering or honouring what brings us joy.

This colour brings me joy, all the little treasures collected on our hikes bring me joy.
A clean house brings me joy!

Family and friends bring me so much joy!

And this guy, more joy.

My fur baby.  I love how he spread out over my new project..an afghan.  I think he's sleeping on about four squares! haha!  I saw an afghan on Priscillas spring home tour and I really wanted to try make it.  So, I'm using up scrap fabric, with my own weird, probably wrong pattern, and I am attempting it.

I did grab some more skeins from Micheal's today and I'm sure I'll need a lot more but I'll be able to use up a lot of the little ends of yarn.  I can't wait to open that new caron skein!!

Until next time, happy nesting!
