Kitchen Makeover

Boy oh boy,  this has truly been a labour of love. Before the kitchen felt so dark,  even with the sun shining in,  the cupboards seemed to absorb all the light.   It took a LONG time to talk me into painting these cupboards. I enjoyed the warmth that the dark wood brought into the kitchen, and I was afraid that by painting the cupboards that feeling would disappear. AND it felt very taboo to paint a new kitchen.   Believe it or not, my husband talked me into it. Apparently, now, after all this time, he loves white cupboards!  I never thought he even cared what went on in here!  Huh.  Well, I absolutely love them too. So bright and fresh and yet it still has that cosy feeling.

Yes it took a lot of paint four coats to be exact. And then a few touch ups.   In our last house we painted our cupboards a creamy white and every spring I would touch them up with a bit of paint. Very little effort for so much satisfaction.

Here's what the kitchen looked like when we first bought our house.  No offence to anyone with a gold kitchen, but eeeeeek! This was the only colour I was told never to wear when I got my colours done way back in the 80's!  And here it was all over our brand new house!

Good thing I'm not afraid of a paint brush, cause the whole house needed a paint job. Yup, brand new house with crazy paint colours.

That definitely helped, but it took a couple tries to get the right greige on the walls for my taste. I can't remember the name of it.   I'll have to go look for a paint card, or paint can to find the name again, comment if you want to know.

The light just bounces around this space now.  Everything that was in here before has stayed.  The tobacco basket was added as a homage to my dark cupboards.

I think those jars on the stove will get some spring time colour soon.  Originally I was planning on using them for herbs, but I don't think they would do well on the stove with all the heat.  We ended up putting sticky tack on the bottom of them so they'd sit on this tiny ledge.  Worked like a charm.

Being an open floor plan I put a lot inside the cupboards. Even inside on the cupboard doors, love letters, notes,  pictures, even our meal plan and grocery list. Making full use of hooks and shelf extentions in and on my cupboards to create more space and better organization.

With the door closed,  no one would be the wiser!

All our little signs and touches have stayed in their spots.
That tiny little ornament by the heart is a witch's ball,  I filled with salt, a tiny rose bud and petals. I've charmed it with some positive intentions and it sits at this window without taking up any space at all.   I have a few scattered around the house in special areas. The heart has been in my kitchen for a long time,it makes me happy every time I see it.

If you have been here before, then you already know I need plants.  My husband built me these shelves a few years ago. all my succulents LOVE this spot.  I love this spot.
Our winters are long and this helps shorten this season.  In a few weeks after I'm finished spring cleaning, I'm going to start  more of my seeds.  Scallions have already been started and sprouting as I type this.  They took off on me, but they'll get trimmed down and used in  salads, sauces, even soups.

This little Lady has been hanging out here for some time, maybe a month!  I've shared my apple with her and she seems to be okay.  How long do lady bugs live for?   I've no idea but I'll do my best with her so she can head outside when it warms up.

On the shelves I not only have plants but I hang my fung shui crystals and other crystals and they cast some beautiful rainbows all over our walls and ceiling.  Another recommendation- get crystals! Lot's of good energy comes flooding in on a rainbow.

Well that's it! Hope you enjoyed seeing our transformation. Maybe it gives you that nudge to paint something that you have been thinking about or do a little switcheroo,  whatever it may be, love your home!

Until next time, happy nesting!

Christmas Dining

Welcome!
I can't believe how fast the clock is ticking.
Phew.
Gradually, I am checking off the items on my to-do list.
Decorating is pretty much done and
now I am just adjusting and tweaking here and there.
Come see what I've done in our
dining room and kitchen.

We painted the dining room, kitchen and living room last
New Years and I am really happy with the subtle difference
it's made...this is the new color below...

and this is the old wall color below.
The old wall color almost looks peachy in this
 Halloween picture.

It's always fun to look back at old choices,
I think that is why I am always so compelled to
document our changes.

All the little lamps on top of cupboards and shelves
are set on timers.  I love when they click on and off through
out the day.  This little lamp really brightens up the dining
nook through the winter months.
The baskets, hidden by the stockings,
on the bottom shelf are filled
with cookbooks and recipe cards.

I love decorating above the cupboards in the kitchen.
All that lovely space to display collections, I can't let it go to waste!
This year I purchased large, plastic, mercury glass-looking
ornaments at Wal-Mart.  They are the perfect size to use with
my red ornaments from a few years ago.

I set the table for fun,
we use it daily so it wont stay like this for long.
Every corner of our main floor gets full use.
It's not too big and not too small.
Efficient.

Normally I am not a big fan of red, but this
year it is working for me.  I have
been adding a bit more then usual.

In this picture you can see just how 'cottage-y' our home
really is.  There is no great expanse of space, but I
can put all the leaves in the table and really
stretch it out if we need to...or
we can squish, in true cottage style ;)

So glad you stopped by!
Hope you are enjoying the season!

Under Cupboard Lighting

You know those days that feel
like murphy's law from the gate?
That's how my day has been.
It started with our kitchen.  When I
turned on the lights, only one out of the three worked.
It wasn't the bulbs, the whole fixture needed
 to be replaced.
Ofcourse.

Not an easy task when you have a limited budget, ok,
no budget for lights right now! Until finally, we
deceided to just suck it up and go with the LED lights.
They seemed to be the right lighting, not bad pricing
and the sizes were available. My handy husband got right on them,
he had them all replaced in no time.  Soooo, much better!
Thanks Murphy for the reminder :)

The wall has a few holes that need to be filled now, and some touch up paint.
It wont take long...  Just add it to my list ;)

Once the lights were finished and the first coat of mud
was on the wall, I thought it would be a great
idea to wash our windows. So, I washed inside and out, and
just as I was finishing  ....It rained...no, no it poured!

So tonight is a WINE night! Lots of wine and turkey soup!
But all is well, that ends well.

Cheers Murphy!

'French Industrial Cottage' Valentine

It doesn't matter where we have lived,
from our first home to the house we are
in now, I nest.  I can NOT help myself.
I take down, I put up, I paint, I rearrange...

I just can't help myself.
And I bet you are the same too.
But its FUN!

And this last weekend ...I was having some FUN
I got new lights over our island and changed
the bulbs in the pocket lights to halogen.
(Look at what Halogen lighting does to a room...
and the wall color, and the wood tones.)

This time I moved my wine holder over,it is covered with burlap and
tucked into the top left corner above the cupboards.
I put parts of my teapot and pitcher collections together.
Our kitchen is EXTREMELY dark, I always
try to keep it light and reflective up above
the cabinets.
I just can't decide if I want to paint the cupboards or not.
I always love the look of a light kitchen,
but fear is taking over for the moment.

See this would be beautiful....

I am going to think on it,
maybe play with some color samples.
Which always puts fear in the eyes of
 my husband and family ;)

I am however, loving my new tea towel from..
French Vanilla, it goes perfectly with
the tea cozy I made this fall.
:)

I am slowly incorporating more and more
wicker into the mix.
I have always liked the texture and
warmth it creates, but this blue/grey wicker
is really beautiful.

The frame on this mirror, I feel , is the
culprit of this change.  And so the
domino effect begins.

I guess I am going
for a french/industrial/cottage look.
So for Valentines,
I added a little burlap heart over the mirror,
put up my banner from last year.
I left some of my Silver Christmas hearts out
for Valentines Day.

The table runner is one I had made from,
you guessed it, drop cloth fabric and paint.
It is stamped with our Wedding date.

I have always mixed old with new.
Difference being that I did it because I had to,
now it's because I like to. On the shelves
I put Antique Cook Books,
silver, bottles, pictures, and FAUX flowers...
I know, I know, but I still love 'em.

The little runner in the middle of the table
has been passed down through our family,
the needle point looks like
Valentines to me.

The table setting is very simple,
with an assortment of styles.
I didn't purchase anything for this
setting, which always makes me happy!

This chair will be headed to the
sewing room soon.  It  needs a little
slip of some sort.  A skirt maybe...

Ok, its time for a little truth,
a few minutes before I started to take photos
for the first time on this clean,
candle light, staged, open concept space,
 EVERYONE decided they
needed lunch, then maybe watch a little
hockey. Sorry family for my melt down.
A tiny melt down, but
A LOT of pacing.

Hope you enjoyed my Valentines Table
and a little peek at some
of the changes going on here.
