Fall Nesting

I love this time of year.
The colors are so vibrant.
The leaves are slowly falling off the trees,
just hanging on for that last show
before the temperature really dips.

I get mesmerized by the leaves dancing on
the Osakazuki Maple in our yard.
It is so much bolder then last year.

I am amazed at how long the leaves on the Japanese Maple are holding on for.
The Amur Cherry lost her leaves about 3 weeks ago,
the tree to the left.

When I look around the garden, and see those lovely
fall shades presenting themselves it is very satisfying.
And I think to myself...
WHERE CAN I PUT ANOTHER JAPANESE MAPLE??

Below is a picture of our garden from last summer.

There has been a little bit of growth from all the plants and trees, but

look at how the color have changed through the seasons!

In the summer I like the greens of the

foliage with white and purple flowers. Come fall,

I love to see the yellows, oranges, reds and burgundies.

Then the skeletons of the garden appear in the winter.

This is a Waterfall Maple.
I am trying to train it to be a tiny bit taller.
Not for privacy, but so we can enjoy it from inside as well.
(Our windows are a bit higher so I am
working on the views from inside.)

Inside it's time for some fall nesting.

In an effort to extent the gardening season,
I've been clipping my hydrangea bushes and bringing
the blossoms in. I've also saved some lavender
to spread through the house, in hopes of extending the season.

I love mixing hydrangea with lavender and raffia.

Together they look very fall-ish.

I only have a few Thanksgiving decorations,
its Halloween that I go a little crazy with.

We finished painting the living room, kitchen

and dining room.

I am tickled!!!

It feels warm and cheery and CoTtAgE-Y!

(more about that later)

But first, lets jump ahead to spring...

which makes it super difficult for me to

be indoors...

The first sign of life in the garden and I am outside...

I CAN'T HELP MYSELF!!!!

For a long part of the year our garden looked like this....

which I find so pretty... I just would rather not work in it.

Tucked in the corner outside our bedroom window

our Waterfall Maple.

Fast forward a few months...

April 20th

our garden looks like this...

(horray!)

My Korean Maple made it through winter!!

It always amazes me how things

can be so 'quiet'

and then suddenly buds start to emerge.

Beautiful.

Below is the Waterfall Maple...minus the snow.

I think it made it too.

A White Lilac Bush,

this one didn't give me a single bloom last

spring, so I didn't prune it at all and it looks

like there should be a few this year.

These are the early buds to Amur Cherry blossoms.

Candytuft..I must spread this around my yard a bit more...it is so hardy and pretty!

If I plant things right, and use the ecosystems in our yard to my

advantage, I can get away with zone 5 plantings.

Its risky though. I should really be planting for a zone 4.

Blah, blah, blah!

Now this is a shoot that I was given from a client at work..Hi Nelda!

Actually, she gave me two, I gave one shoot to my sister and kept this one.

It is doing really well.

If you look really close you can see that this Limelight Hydrangea

is giving me a few more shoots too!

We have started on some major changes in our backyard

this spring. My sweet husband has been breaking

his back digging for our new water feature.

I can't wait to show you the details,

My favorite corner

I really shouldn't say that this corner is my favorite,
my whole yard has been a labour of love.
I am just really happy with this spot!

It all grew and settled nicely, from the first
day it was planted.

Last year, one of my clients from work gave me a

container full of hostas.

I knew that hostas love

shade so it was a no brainer...

I had to take the grass out of this corner.

The grass never grew very well here anyways. This corner

was just a really bad

eyesore.

I found this gorgeous Waterfall Maples for $40!

(They are typically a zone 5, but, being tucked in a corner,

protected from the heavy snow and a drier vent directed on it...

it survived its first winter here..phheww.)

I bought a few more perennials,

a Viola, a white Bleeding Heart,

and this little alpine flower, Corsican Sandwort.

It is an evergreen, and good with foot traffic!!

Then, I added some boulders,

and I half buried a flower pot with

some pansies flowing out.

Then I mulched this corner with cedar

chips and shredded cedar.

Here are some photos of this

You can see the Viola off to the left of this picture...
something has been munching on it!

I sprayed it with a dish soap and water mixture,
hopefully that will help.
